The Compression Load Cell — Common but Mighty

A compression load cell senses and converts mechanical force into electrical measurements used in monitoring and testing process systems, in addition to being a component in operational devices such as scales. Adaptable to an extensive array of applications, compression load cells can be an effective means of improving process control—from receipt of raw materials through packing and shipping of orders.

Adaptable to an extensive array of applications, compression load cells can be an effective means of improving process control—from receipt of raw materials through packing and shipping of orders.

Because of their important and on-going contribution to operational success, compression load cells are commonplace in almost every industry imaginable, including:

  • Agriculture and food
  • Building construction and operations
  • Chemical
  • General automation
  • Lifting machinery of all types (elevators, cranes, etc.)
  • Manufacturing
    • Inventory control
    • Batching and dlending
    • Dispensing, filling and packaging
    • Quality Inspection and Shipping
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Mining
  • Oil and Gas
  • Petrochemical
  • Paper and pulp
  • Power generation

What Compression Load Cells Do

A compression load cell measures straight line, “push together” force by noting the changes (e.g., size, strength) in an object when it is compressed or squeezed. The measurement of the force acting on the load sensor is then converted into an electronic signal, the output of which is dependent upon the load cell’s circuitry design.

Design and Types of Compression Load Cells

Generally, compression load cells are composed of:

  • a sensor, often termed a strain gauge
  • a circuit, which is the connection of the gauges throughout the load cell.
  • a mount that holds the load cell in place and protects it during operation

After the cells transduce mechanical force into electrical energy, that data is sent to a computerized data collection system for reporting and analysis. An innovator in interface connection options in the process industry, Hardy Process Solutions offers a wide variety of them, including DeviceNet, ControlNet, EtherNet, EtherNet/IP, Remote I/O, Profibus, Modbus TCP, Analog and Serial, among others.

There are many compression load cells design types, including pancake, column, donut, load button, beam and force cells. Low profile, miniature and subminiature size variations are available, and capabilities range from one gram to a million pounds. Fortunately, choosing the best-fit compression load cell for your operation does not have to be complicated.

A recognized expert, Hardy Process Solutions has supplied compression load cells, among many other process control enhancements, for over 90 years and has a team of professionals to assist you with a customized solution for your unique needs and goals.
